MikeMessage from Mike Meotti
President, United Way of Connecticut

This is my last time appearing in the Community Connections e-newsletter because I will become Connecticut's Commissioner of Higher Education in early March. Despite getting hundreds of thousands of calls each year, I still consider United Way's 2-1-1 service and other programs to be one of our state's 'best kept secrets.' 'Best' because this is a great service that constantly seeks to innovate to serve Connecticut residents better. 'Secret' because 2-1-1 should be as well known to our state's families as 9-1-1; but it isn't. I already see opportunities for 2-1-1 to partner with Connecticut's colleges and universities to increase public awareness. I hope you can join the effort and spread the word to all your contacts and networks. Thanks!

HUSKY Pharmacy Coverage

Starting February 1, the Department of Social Services began administering the prescription benefit for HUSKY and SAGA (State-Administered General Assistance). All HUSKY members now need to use their gray CONNECT cards at the pharmacy. Members can contact HUSKY if they need a new card but can temporarily use their white plan card or provide the pharmacy with their social security number and date of birth. For more information contact HUSKY.

Housing Requests
Requests for information on housing issues topped the list of calls to 2-1-1 in 2007. Of the 39,090 statewide calls on housing, over 13,500 requested information on homeless shelters. To understand the number of homeless in Connecticut, volunteers conducted a count of homeless individuals and families in January. It is estimated that approximately 33,000 individuals, including 13,000 children, experience homelessness in Connecticut every year. For information on housing visit 2-1-1's e-library.

HUSKY Health Plan Transition

Starting April 1, HealthNet and Wellcare/Preferred One will no longer be participating with HUSKY. HUSKY members will have BlueCare Family Plan and Community Health Network as the managed care options. HUSKY A will also offer Traditional Medicaid as an option (not available with HUSKY B). Services have not been affected by this change, the only difference is the doctors who participate. For more information contact HUSKY.
