CEOThe American Recovery and Reinvestment Act allocated $1.2 billion nationwide for grants to States for youth activities, including summer jobs. Connecticut will receive approximately $16 million over the next two years for summer youth employment programs. The State’s 5 Workforce Investment Boards (WIB) are currently working to develop these jobs. The deadline for applications varies, by WIB, from late April to May. Visit United Way 2-1-1 for more information on these summer employment programs.

2-1-1 Navigator Celebrates 2nd Anniversary

Since 2007, United Way’s 2-1-1 Navigator has helped approximately 16,000 individuals and families get connected to the benefits they need, either directly or through local service providers. This online benefits screening tool asks residents a few basic questions about themselves to help them find out if they may be eligible for a number of State and Federal public assistance programs. Responses are compared with the eligibility guidelines of 24 programs. A list of programs for which the residents may qualify is then immediately generated.

Mortgage Foreclosures Continue to Increase

In February, foreclosures in Connecticut jumped significantly affecting 1 in every 648 housing units. Over 2,200 properties filed for foreclosure during that month, a 34% increase from January. United Way 2-1-1 has received close to 1,000 requests for services related to mortgage foreclosures in the first 3 months of 2009, representing a 150% increase over the same period in 2008. Visit 2-1-1's elibrary for the latest information on mortgage foreclosure assistance, including links to new American Recovery and Reinvestment Act foreclosure assistance programs.

Help for Active Military, Veterans and Families

Veterans and returning soldiers who need assistance with finding affordable housing, jobs, or health and mental health care can contact United Way 2-1-1 for the information and resources they need. Information and resources are also available for families of veterans and soldiers. Visit 2-1-1 Child Care for information on Operation Military Kids, a program aimed at providing support for the children and youth impacted by the current conflicts.
