2-1-1 Assists with Disaster Aid Appeal

United Way 2-1-1 was pleased to assist the state in its successful appeal of the federal government's decision to deny aid for residents affected by severe storms in March. The Governor and the Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security (DEMHS) requested that 2-1-1 take calls from residents and provide an online survey where damage could be reported. 2-1-1 received approximately 1,500 calls and 1,500 visits to its web-based survey from individuals who experienced property damage. Affected residents now need to apply for FEMA disaster assistance by calling (800) 621-3362 or visiting www.disasterassistance.gov.

Summer Food

The state's Summer Food Service Program is expected to serve close to 35,000 Connecticut children this summer. The program is available to ensure that children in lower-income neighborhoods who receive meals during the school year can continue to receive them during the summer. Last year more than 33,000 children were served at 468 locations statewide through 39 locally sponsored programs. Click here for more information and a link to a listing of meal sites.

Volunteering on the Rise

A new report has found that the number of people volunteering in their communities in the U.S. has increased. In Connecticut, the report found that 33% of state residents volunteered an average of 34.7 hours in 2009. The state ranks 17th in the percent of volunteers and 21st in the number of hours served.

2-1-1 has an extensive database of volunteer opportunities. Dial 2-1-1 or click here for more information.

EPIC Training

Child Development Infoline is now offering EPIC training at pediatric offices statewide. EPIC, Educating Practices in the Community, is offered through the Child Health and Developmental Institute of CT. CDI Care Coordinators will present information that highlights the importance of early childhood developmental surveillance. Click here for more information.

The mission of the United Way of Connecticut is to help meet the needs of Connecticut residents by providing information, education and connection to services.
